Studies Detail Possible Benefits Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids For Dogs With Arthritis

A series of studies published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) offers new insights into the possible benefits derived from feeding foods containing high omega-3 fatty acid concentrations to dogs with osteoarthritis.

The results of the three studies, according to contributing author Dr. Kevin Hahn, director of research and chief medical officer at Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc., show that the dogs that were fed the foods experienced less pain associated with the disease and greater mobility.

Ensure Your Pet’s Health: Consider Pet Insurance

Statistics show that pet health insurance is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. In fact, the number of American pets covered by pet health insurance has more than doubled since 2002. Still, far too many pets are uninsured, and every year, some are euthanized simply because their owners can’t afford the cost of medical care.

Do not let this happen to your pet! With several insurance companies and dozens of different policies to choose from, pet health insurance deserves your serious consideration.

Studies have shown that many pet owners can manage expenses up to $500 but have difficulty with expenses beyond that level. Until recently, pet owners had to dip into their savings to pay for pet care. Today, personal savings are just one way to pay for veterinary services. Here are some factors to help you decide which option or combination of options works best for you.

Living With Pets Who Have Missing Limbs

By Jen Reeder

Kandu, a seven-year-old “mostly” Jack Russell terrier, was born without front legs, so his owners took him to a veterinarian in Evergreen, Colo., to be euthanized. The veterinarian refused — and Kandu was adopted by Ken and Melissa Rogers, who found that Kandu has adapted quite well to his disability.

“We have a blast,” Ken says of life with Kandu.

“Don’t look past the dogs with disabilities. They can adapt and make great pets.”

The couple sought advice from OrthoPets, a Denver-based company specializing in prosthetic and orthopedic mobility options for dogs. A type of wheelchair was devised to help Kandu get around outside. They strap him into a plastic, padded vest that connects to in-line skate wheels. That way, he can push himself down a ramp that they had installed to get to the dog run in the backyard. In the snow, Kandu trades in his wheels for a mono-ski, which he loves because it’s lighter than the wheeled “gizmo.”

Living With Blind and Deaf Pets

By Jen Reeder

Philadelphia resident Karen Belfi’s dog, Ray Charles, was born without eyes, possibly because his mother had a virus. But when visitors meet the 12-year-old husky/collie/shepherd mix for the first time, he navigates the house so well that “they don’t believe he can’t see,” Belfi says.

Belfi has been so inspired by her pet that she cofounded a support group for owners of blind dogs, Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, which has an email list with more than 4,000 members. Often, owners of dogs who have recently become blind due to glaucoma, diabetes, or from another disease ask if they should have their dog euthanized because of perceived quality-of-life issues.

Wellness Care for Your Cat

By Terri Johnson, CVT

While a wellness care philosophy isn’t new, focusing on keeping pets healthy instead of just treating illnesses can really enhance their lives. Aubrey Lavizzo, DVM, owner of The Center for Animal Wellness in Denver, Colo., recently built a new practice and changed the name to reflect his overall wellness philosophy.

“Our old name, Plaza Veterinary Clinic, didn’t reflect how we practiced medicine or what we’d become,” Lavizzo explains. “We’ve been practicing wellness and preventive care for years, focusing on educating clients about the importance of annual wellness exams and follow-ups. The name change reflects the positive approach we take in our practice.”

An Animal Rescue That's All Heart

We’re pleased to bring you news of another financial award made by The Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation, this time to a courageous organization of homeless animal rescuers in Maryland.

Founded in 2003, HART for Animals seeks to become “a model for compassionate animal rescue”. We feel that they’ve done a commendable job organizing individual volunteers who specialize in placing animals abandoned at local shelters with foster parents until forever homes can be located. By taking in pets from the Garrett County Animal Shelter and the Garrett County Humane Society, they have saved hundreds of animals who otherwise would probably have been euthanized. Further, HART oversees the transfer of homeless dogs and cats from areas of low inhabitance to more populous cities in an effort to increase the likelihood of long-term adoption.

Pets Make Life Healthier for their Pet Parents

Many of us agree that we should do everything within our power to make sure that our companion animals enjoy the best possible life. But did you know that simply by playing a role in your life, your furry kids could actually help you to be not only happier but healthier?

Of course you did. It’s all part of the privilege and fun of being a pet parent. What you may not know is that there’s plenty of science to back it up. As a holistic veterinarian, I’ve read so many reports regarding the health benefits associated with having companion animals, which has been accumulated over the last two decades, including numerous research studies in the U.S. and across the globe.

A study published in The British Journal of Health Psychology reports that people who have companion animals tended to be healthier than those who did not. Additionally, when a dog was part of the family, the human family members had fewer minor ailments, lower blood pressures and lower cholesterol levels. Although the explanation for these advantages is unclear, these researchers guessed that all benefits might be accounted for by reduced stress levels. In these cases, lower stress levels might have been due to increased physical activity (like walking the dog) and levels of social interaction (hanging out with other pet-friendly folks).
